Away of Living is a Belgian ska-punk band with influences of emo but mainly punk rock. On the mic and guitar is Oscar, backed up by Koen on guitar, Bram on bass, Christopher on drums and Flo on alt-sax.
It all started around New Year’s Eve 2003. Oscar, Flo and Jahke happened to be in the same place at the same time, which was at JH Kwamma in Wemmel. Jahke and Flo started talking about starting a band and Oscar (who eagerly wanted to start a band as well!) got wind of that. Luckily Flo knew a drummer who wanted to join as well so that was pretty much set. All we needed was a bass player. Oscar knew one...but he and his friend have had an argument and weren’t talking to each other.
They forgot and forgave and now it really started to look like a band.
Away of Living has had a few other people trying out for the band. Some of them were very motivated while others never showed up once. For those who traveled a lot of miles, canceled appointments and even broke up with their lovers just to play in this band ... RESPECT! You know who you are!!!
So the band started writing actual songs and it went surprisingly smooth. Of course there were these times that Away of Living didn’t get a chance to rehearse at all due to the exams Chris and Flo had to get ready for. There were even moments that the motivation started to lack a bit. But after those horrific exams we got together again (this is about the time Koen [ex Hi-Hat] joined our band) to refresh our memories on our songs and somehow there was this spark. The songs sounded a lot better then two months earlier; maybe it was just because we haven’t heard the songs in a while, or maybe it was because jamming together every Saturday created a certain “bright moment at the end of the work week” as Sammy (our number one groupie!) has put it so nicely.
Lately the amount of rehearsals increased from once a week to two or three times a week which also just boosted up the motivation to get ready for the stage as songs started to get better each time we played them in our honest opinions.
Anyway...We’ve come a long way in just one year time and we are ready to bring our stuff to the outside world. Get some feedback (both good and bad are welcome), play a few gigs, have a few laughs, have a few beers (not to many Flo!) and basically just live our lives the way we want to.
